Claremont McKenna College taps VCE Vblock™ Infrastructure Platform as Cloud Computing Cornerstone
DALLAS, Texas – January 27, 2011 – Claremont McKenna College selected the VCE Vblock™ Infrastructure Platform for installation in its new data center to improve efficiency and security and lay the foundation for cloud-based disaster recovery. VCE, the Virtual Computing Environment Company, was formed by Cisco and EMC, with investments from VMware and Intel.
“VCE took a completely fresh look at data center infrastructure, with the result that the Vblock platform is optimized for cloud computing,” said Jeremy Whaley, Director of Information Systems and Network Services at Claremont McKenna College. “As our computing needs grow, we can add storage and compute capacity in small increments. And we’ll be able to control numerous Vblock systems from the same management interface.”
Claremont McKenna College (CMC), with 1200 undergraduate students, is part of a prestigious seven-college community in Southern California.
CMC selected the VCE Vblock platform over two other pre-integrated data center platforms in order to best meet its requirements for:
- Supporting virtual desktops in a lab setting.
- Rapid provisioning of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for faculty, staff, and students who host websites.
- Introducing into the cloud new apps and services, with less staff effort.
- Fast technical assistance.
“Having a single point of contact for any issue, whether related to servers, storage, or virtualization, saves staff time and accelerates issue resolution,” Whaley said.
CMC also chose a Vblock platform to help with disaster recovery, particularly for CMC’s future plans to consolidate storage from The Claremont Colleges onto the Vblock platform and then replicate virtual machines and data over the WAN to a private cloud service provider.
“VCE is proud to support Claremont McKenna College with our pre-packaged, completely integrated infrastructure platform and solutions,” said Blake Sallé, Senior Vice President Worldwide Channels and Public Sector, VCE. “We bring together the industry’s best technology with end-to-end vendor accountability to dramatically lower IT costs, while eliminating most planning and configuration burdens, enabling IT to respond more quickly to the needs of the organization, and creating new ways for the organization to innovate in their business.”
